THE DEVIL · Material & Institutional Power

In most tarot decks, the Devil-card shows chained figures at the feet of a horned throne. Readers unfamiliar with the iconography think this is a card about evil. It is not. The Devil-card is the card of material and institutional power — states, bureaucracies, tax authorities, surveillance, social shame, debt, and all the other chains humans wear because it seems too much trouble to take them off. Look closely at the chains in any good deck: the chains are loose. The figures could lift them over their heads and walk away at any moment. The card is not about captivity. The card is about the illusion of captivity.

II. THE DEVIL CARD APPLIED · WHY INSTITUTIONAL POWER DOES NOT SURVIVE A SELF-WATCHING SOVEREIGN

Governments, at their strongest,
operate in the territory of The Devil-card:

“we’ve had our eyes on you.”

Their power is material.
Their power is institutional.

that King Spiros quietly lived into existence
